Why Confirmation?

From Holy Baptism until a young person is old enough to affirm their own faith in Jesus Christ, the child's parents and baptismal sponsors are responsible for their faith walk.

Confirmation is a three year learning and development process during which young people prepare to assume responsibility for their own journey of faith.

Who is Confirmation for?

The Holy Cross Confirmation Program is designed for young persons in grades 6-8. Of course older youth and and even adults may also participate if they come to the church later in life.

What do you do?

In Confirmation we learn about the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, the Apostle's Creed, the Holy Sacraments, the Bible, Confession & Absolution, Martin Luther and the Life of Jesus.

This is accomplished through classroom teaching, coordinated home devotions, faith mentoring relationships, small group activities, service projects, spiritual retreats and a Christian camping experiences.

What curriculum is used?

Our program is based on a small group relationship model and materials developed by Faith Inkubators, Inc.  This active learning model includes music, games, skits, art work, movies, storytelling, prayer and special projects.

The basic source materials are the same ones Lutherans have been using since the 17th century: the Small Catechism and the Bible. However this learning model incorporates modern teaching methods and faith mentoring.

Isn't Confirmation boring?

Many Lutheran parents remember long, boring Confirmation classes filled with tests and memory work. This new teaching model is very, very different! Parents report that their youth really enjoy the program and are glad to be involved. Most importantly we learn not just facts but how to live as a Christian in the world.

Are parents involved?

Parents are involved on several different levels: (1) They may be recruited as Small Group Leaders who serve as guides and mentors to the youth. (2) They are asked to do daily devotions keyed to the Confirmation materials with their child. (3) Parents are encouraged to worship regularly with their youth. (4) They provide refreshments for the group at least once each year and may be asked to help provide transportation for group events.

Are there any fees?

All regular Confirmation materials and activities are funded by the church budget. Parents are asked to pay for half of the weeks spent at a Christian camp (approx. $130) and for the spiritual retreat ($75). Please do not let these expenses be of concern. Scholarships are available as needed for all events.
